ORI Highlights Health Benefits of Cobblestone Walking
The Oregon Research Institute (ORI) recently completed a study confirming cobblestone walking improved blood pressure, balance and physical ability in persons over the age of 60. John Fisher, Ph.D., a lead scientist of the study states, “Compared to conventional walking, the experience of walking on the river rock-like surface of these manufactured cobblestone mats improved participants' balance, measures of mobility, as well as reducing their blood pressure. These issues are highly important for preventing and delaying the onset of frailty among older adults, as well as helping them maintain their current health status."
The National Institute on Aging funded the study and the study consisted of dividing the participants into two groups; a control group, which took part in conventional walking activities, and a group of cobblestone mat walkers. Each group participated in one-hour walking activities, three times a week for 16 weeks. Scientists noted a striking difference. The cobblestone walkers showed improvements in physical condition, balance and lowered blood pressure. Concluding on the study, the scientists remarked on the potential breakthrough in therapeutic and health enhancing exercise that can be done both quickly and easily without having to leave the comforts of one’s home.
